Environmental discussion has become a kind of second language—one most of us were never formally taught. Habitat

Niche
The functional job a species performs inside its habitat: what it eats, what eats it, when it is active, and how it fits into the larger web of relationships.
Biosphere
Every place on our planet where life exists, stitched together as one thin living shell—from hydrothermal vents kilometres below the sea to bacteria drifting high in the stratosphere.
Food Chain
A single-file line showing how energy travels from one creature to the next. Grass feeds a rabbit, the rabbit feeds a fox, and so on.
Food Web
A tangle of overlapping food chains. Most animals eat several things and are eaten by several things, so the real picture looks more like a net than a ladder.
Trophic Level
A rung on the energy ladder. Plants sit at the bottom; herbivores are one level up; carnivores and top predators sit higher still. Roughly 90 percent of the energy is lost as heat between each rung.
Photosynthesis
The chemistry that lets plants, algae, and some bacteria turn light, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. Almost every calorie you have ever eaten started here.
Decomposition
Nature's recycling service, run by fungi, bacteria, worms, and beetles that break dead matter back down into soil nutrients.
Symbiosis
A tight, long-running relationship between two species. The three flavors are mutualism (both win—think bees and flowers), commensalism (one benefits, the other shrugs), and parasitism (one benefits by harming the other).

Talking About a Warming Planet

Climate coverage is loaded with jargon, much of it borrowed from chemistry, physics, and international law. Here are the terms that come up most often in headlines and treaty negotiations.

Climate Change
A sustained shift in global temperature and weather patterns. Earth's climate has always moved, but the warming we have seen since about 1950 is driven mainly by human use of fossil fuels.
Global Warming
The steady rise in the planet's average surface temperature. It is one symptom of climate change, tied directly to the buildup of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse Effect
The way certain atmospheric gases catch outgoing heat and keep the surface warm enough for life. The problem today is the enhanced version, amplified by emissions from cars, factories, and livestock.
Greenhouse Gases (GHGs)
Heat-trapping gases in the air. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) gets most of the attention, but methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O), and industrial fluorinated gases also matter.
Carbon Footprint
A tally of the greenhouse gases a person, company, trip, or product is responsible for, usually expressed as kilograms or tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
Carbon Sequestration
Pulling CO₂ out of the air and locking it away. Healthy forests, peat bogs, kelp beds, and deep-rock storage sites all do this—some naturally, some with help from engineering.
Paris Agreement
The 2015 climate accord, adopted under the UNFCCC, in which almost every country pledged to hold global warming well under 2 °C, and ideally to 1.5 °C, above pre-industrial temperatures.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
The UN-backed scientific panel that reviews published climate research and issues periodic reports summarising what is known for policymakers.
Tipping Point
A threshold where a small extra push causes a system to flip into a new state that may be hard—or impossible—to reverse. The potential collapse of the Atlantic circulation is one example under active study.
Adaptation
Changes we make to live with the climate that is already arriving. Examples include raising highways above flood levels, breeding heat-tolerant wheat, and cooling off-grid clinics with solar fans.
Mitigation
Actions that cut or prevent emissions so the warming itself is kept as small as possible—switching power grids off coal, insulating homes, electrifying transport, and stopping deforestation.

Protecting Life on Earth

Life on the planet is losing variety at an alarming pace. The vocabulary below turns up constantly in reporting on wildlife, extinction risk, and conservation.

Biodiversity
The full spread of living variety—different genes inside a species, different species inside an ecosystem, and different ecosystems across a region. Rich biodiversity tends to make systems more resilient to shocks.
Endangered Species
A plant or animal in serious danger of dying out in the wild. The IUCN sorts at-risk species into Vulnerable, Endangered, and Critically Endangered categories.
Extinction
The final exit of a species from the planet. Today species are disappearing at roughly 100 to 1,000 times the natural background pace, which is why biologists speak of a sixth mass extinction.
Invasive Species
A plant, animal, or microbe introduced to a new region where it spreads unchecked, often crowding out locals. Cane toads in Australia and zebra mussels in the Great Lakes are textbook cases.
Habitat Fragmentation
When a wide, continuous stretch of wild country gets chopped into isolated pieces by highways, farms, or suburbs. Small patches support smaller populations, and gene pools shrink.
Conservation
Protecting and carefully managing nature so it lasts. The work ranges from running national parks to helping pastoralists coexist with lions on village land.
Rewilding
A hands-off approach that brings back missing native species and lets natural processes—floods, fires, predator-prey dynamics—do the heavy lifting.
Keystone Species
A species whose influence on its ecosystem is huge compared with how many individuals there are. Sea otters eating urchins keep kelp forests alive; take the otters out and the forest collapses.

Pollution, Waste, and Contamination

Pollution fouls air, water, and land, and the damage shows up in wildlife numbers and human health statistics alike.

Pollution
Any release of harmful substances or energy into the environment. The main flavors are air, water, soil, noise, light, and thermal pollution.
Particulate Matter (PM)
Microscopic bits of dust, soot, and liquid floating in the air. The smallest—PM2.5—is the most dangerous because it slips past the body's defenses and into the bloodstream.
Smog
A brownish haze that forms when sunlight cooks vehicle and industrial exhaust into ground-level ozone. Cities like Delhi and Los Angeles have long struggled with smoggy summers.
Eutrophication
The flood of nutrients, often from fertiliser runoff, that supercharges algae in lakes and bays. When the algae die and rot, they strip oxygen from the water and suffocate fish.
Microplastics
Plastic bits under five millimetres across, either deliberately manufactured or shed as larger items break down. They have now been found in rain, bottled water, table salt, and human placentas.
Landfill
A site where rubbish is buried. Engineered landfills use liners and pipes to capture leachate, but they still leak methane and need monitoring for decades.
E-Waste
Discarded phones, laptops, TVs, and other electronics. The mix of toxic metals and valuable rare earths makes e-waste both a hazard and a resource.

Fuels, Power, and Resources

How we make electricity, move vehicles, and heat buildings sits at the centre of almost every environmental question.

Fossil Fuels
Coal, oil, and natural gas, all formed over millions of years from buried organic matter. Burning them releases the carbon locked inside along with other pollutants.
Renewable Energy
Energy drawn from sources that refill themselves on human timescales—sunlight, wind, moving water, Earth's heat, and plant biomass.
Solar Energy
Electricity and heat captured from the sun, either with photovoltaic panels that convert light directly to current or with mirrors and fluids in solar-thermal plants. It is currently the cheapest new power source in most markets.
Wind Energy
Power generated by turbines spun by moving air. Offshore wind, with its steadier gusts, is the fastest-growing branch of the industry.
Carbon Neutral
Reaching a zero net carbon balance by matching whatever CO₂ you emit with equivalent removals or purchased offsets.
Net Zero
A broader goal covering all greenhouse gases: every tonne released must be cancelled by a tonne removed. Most major economies have set target dates of 2050 or 2060.
Energy Efficiency
Getting the same job done with less energy. Heat pumps, LED bulbs, better-insulated walls, and electric motors replacing combustion engines are classic efficiency wins.

Greener Living and Sustainable Choices

Sustainability, at its simplest, means living in a way the planet can keep supplying—today and for the generations after us.

Sustainability
Managing resources so human societies thrive without drawing down the ecological systems they depend on.
Circular Economy
A production model that designs out waste. Products are built to be repaired, refurbished, and eventually fed back into new items, replacing the old take-make-throw-away pipeline.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The classic waste hierarchy: cut what you buy first, reuse what you have, and recycle only as a last resort. Newer versions add "refuse" at the top and "rot" (composting) at the bottom.
Greenwashing
Marketing that exaggerates or fabricates a company's environmental credentials—vague "eco" labels, green leaf logos, and carbon claims that fall apart under scrutiny.
Organic
Grown or raised without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or GMOs. Certification schemes like USDA Organic or the EU leaf set the specific rules farmers must follow.
Fair Trade
A certification model that guarantees producers in low-income countries a minimum price and safer working conditions, commonly applied to coffee, cocoa, tea, and bananas.

Rivers, Oceans, and Freshwater

Water shapes climate, feeds agriculture, and hosts an enormous share of the planet's life. These terms show up in everything from local drought reporting to marine biology papers.

Watershed
The area of land that drains into a single river, lake, or ocean basin. What happens uphill—farming, logging, paving—shows up downstream in water quality.
Aquifer
An underground body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater. Wells tap aquifers to supply drinking water, though many are being pumped faster than they can recharge.
Ocean Acidification
The gradual drop in seawater pH as the ocean soaks up extra atmospheric CO₂. More acidic water dissolves the shells and skeletons of corals, oysters, and plankton.
Coral Bleaching
When heat-stressed corals eject the colourful algae living in their tissues, leaving behind pale skeletons. Short spells are survivable; long ones kill the reef.
Dead Zone
A patch of water with oxygen levels too low to support most animal life. The Gulf of Mexico's summer dead zone, fed by farm runoff from the Mississippi, is one of the largest on the planet.

The Ground Beneath Our Feet

Erosion
The gradual stripping away of soil and rock by wind, flowing water, glaciers, or gravity. Ploughing bare fields and clear-cutting hillsides both speed the process dramatically.
Deforestation
Large-scale removal of trees for farming, ranching, timber, or development. The carbon stored in those trees enters the atmosphere, and the species that lived among them lose their homes.
Desertification
When once-productive drylands lose their plant cover and slide toward desert, usually through a mix of drought, overgrazing, and damaging farming. The Sahel in West Africa shows the pattern clearly.
Permafrost
Soil that has stayed frozen for at least two years running. As Arctic warming thaws it, ancient carbon and methane escape, feeding back into further warming.
Topsoil
The dark, fertile uppermost layer of soil where most plant roots live. It takes hundreds of years to build an inch of it and only a season of bad farming to lose it.

Laws, Treaties, and Regulation

Environmental outcomes depend heavily on rules: who is allowed to pollute, who pays, and who enforces the limits. These are the tools governments reach for.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
A formal study of the likely ecological consequences of a proposed road, dam, mine, or other project, completed before permits are granted. It gives regulators and communities a basis for approving, modifying, or blocking the plan.
Cap and Trade
An emissions trading scheme: regulators set a ceiling on total pollution, hand out or auction permits, and let companies buy and sell them. As the ceiling drops year by year, so do the permits.
Carbon Tax
A fee charged on each tonne of CO₂ emitted, meant to steer businesses and consumers toward cleaner alternatives by putting a price tag on pollution.
EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
The United States federal body in charge of writing and enforcing rules on air, water, and toxic substances. Most countries run a comparable agency under a different name.
Precautionary Principle
A guideline that says when a new activity might cause serious harm to people or nature, protective measures should be taken even before the science is fully settled.

  • Follow primary sources. IPCC "Summary for Policymakers" documents, NOAA bulletins, and peer-reviewed articles drop new terms in their working context.
